Assembling a team of selected City professionals to provide unbiased information and a strategic perspective to the Tories. Contributing to the presentation "Keeping London at the forefront of Islamic finance". This initiative contributed to the issuing of the maiden GPB 200 million UK sovereign sukuk in 2014.
The presentation to the Shadow Treasury team and the Conservative Treasury front bench in the House of Lords was delivered on 16 November 2009 by a group of the City key practitioners in Islamic finance. It was preceded by several closed-door meetings to develop a clear and effective communication strategy. An additional goal of this initiative was to provide a possible agenda for the issuance of a sovereign sukuk.
It showcased the competitive advantage enjoyed by London, the importance of Islamic finance for the City to maintain its role of one of the world's finance hubs, the commercial need for Islamic Finance and the market expectations for a sovereign Sukuk. The issuance of the latter was deemed particularly important to keep London at the forefront of the Islamic finance proposition and respond to a pressing demand for short term sovereign instruments from UK Islamic financial institutions.
Sovereign Sukuk was finally issued in 2014.
